HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK) – Around midnight Sunday, residents of an apartment building on 12th Street in the community of Altizer were warned by neighbors after noticing a fire on the first floor.

One of the building’s residents, Michelle Byars, said that within minutes it quickly got out of hand.

It was in a room when we noticed the fire and by the time I got out onto the road and everyone got out of the building it was engulfed.

All residents inside the building were able to exit safely. Byars says she planned to move from one unit to another the next day, but, sadly, everything inside is gone.

Several neighbors in the neighborhood say they have never seen anything like it. Some, even though they were a good distance away, say they were still afraid for their own lives.

With the transformer so close … my kids, I wanted them to be safe inside, to stay on the ground even though everyone was here.

Electricity in the area was cut for a few hours as crews struggled to control the flames. Byars says that even though she has lost all of her possessions, she is happy to still have the people who mean the most to her.

The Red Cross is helping affected families and making arrangements to live through this difficult time. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

This is a developing story, and we will continue to update it on WOWKTV.com, the WOWK 13 News app and on 13 News on air..
