DETROIT LAKES — Needy tenants are in high demand at the Detroit Lakes Housing and Redevelopment Authority as the organization seeks more candidates to apply for its housing assistance program.

The program is designed to cap the amount of money qualified applicants would pay their landlord at 30% of their income, with the authority picking up the rest of the monthly cost, said Nicole Bristlin, housing manager for the Detroit Lakes. HRA.

“A lot of (program recipients) have been on the program for years, and then some of them, not that long,” Bristlin said.

Income requirements are unique to each county, she said, so Becker County’s income cap might be different than Otter Tail County’s. If someone thinks they may qualify for something, she wants them to stop by the office.

The program is administered by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. In Detroit Lakes, 118 tenants are currently using the program, she said. For people on fixed incomes, like Social Security, the program can really benefit them, she added.

“It’s for old people who only have social security and it pays a lot (their rent),” she said. Beneficiaries on low fixed incomes “are very grateful for that because otherwise all their money goes to rent,” she added.

The organization also runs the city’s public housing program, where low-income families can find reasonable family housing. Currently, she says, one unit is available for rent, but the waiting list is very short and people are moving all the time.

Bristlin also suggested people struggling with rent or housing stop by the Detroit Lakes HRA office at 1111 Washington Avenue, and a staff member will go over the various programs with them and find out what they are eligible for. .

The group also runs the city’s public housing program, which has one unit available at Pleasant View in Detroit Lakes for someone earning less than $41,750 a year, she said. The waiting list for available public housing is ‘short’ at the moment, she added, and anyone looking for subsidized housing should stop by their office and get on the list waiting.

“There is availability and our waiting list is very short,” Bristlin said. “There’s a pre-application to get on our waitlist, and then we’ll send them more information when they get to the top.”
