WACO, Texas (KWTX) – The City of Temple is launching a new program to help renovate social housing to be more affordable and up to standards.

Whether you are a student or a new family looking for your first place to live, it can be quite a challenge.

Nancy Glover, the city’s director of housing and community development, said that in recent years, potential residents have seen dozens of unstable apartments pass HUD inspections.

“They basically have 180 days to find a home,” she said.

“They’ve seen customers come back who just can’t find accommodation and they’ll have to hand in their voucher and then the process starts all over again. So these are really struggling here because there is simply no accommodation available here.

In the program, homeowners can apply for grants to renovate their properties. Approved applicants will receive funds in the form of a 50/50 repayment grant, helping turn these properties into housing choice voucher acceptance.

“Last year over 50 housing choice vouchers were returned,” temple spokeswoman Kiara Nowlin said.

“Since the program was announced, we have been contacted by several interested groups, but we have only received 3 full applications.

Nowlin says the city doesn’t know why more requests haven’t been received. Even so, Glover says they hope to get the word out more because the program is not only a chance to further develop the area, but also to provide safe and affordable housing for those central Texans who are just starting out.

“It is absolutely critical that we continue to promote this program and encourage these owners to take advantage of it,” she said.

“Also, it’s about educating them on the right housing choices. “
