PLAINWELL, MI – A woman has been found dead in an apartment fire in Plainwell, according to Director of Public Safety Kevin Callahan.

At approximately 11:19 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, Plainwell Department of Public Safety officers and firefighters responded to the 1100 block of North Main Street for a report of smoke coming from an apartment building, according to a news release. by Callahan.

Firefighters located and extinguished a small fire inside an apartment and immediately located a deceased elderly woman, the news release said.

The Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit was called to the scene to help determine the cause. A preliminary investigation appears to show evidence that the fire may be related to smoking and an oxygen generator, but a final decision will be made once the investigation is complete, Callahan said in the news release.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. No names are being released pending family notification, the department said.

The building was evacuated and all residents were allowed inside once the fire was extinguished and the building declared safe. The Gun Plain Fire Department, Plainwell EMS, Allegan County Sheriff’s Office and Allegan County Central Dispatch assisted Plainwell Public Safety Officers and Fire Department.
