CHICAGO (CBS) – A 23-year-old woman was days away from graduating from university when she was ambushed outside an elevator in her own building in Edgewater and shot and killed this week.

Hours later, police said they also found a dead man inside the same building. On Tuesday evening, the police were trying to determine if the two deaths that occurred in 24 hours in the same building were linked.

As her family told CBS 2’s Marissa Perlman on Tuesday, Brittany Kinlow’s family said she just finished the finale. Kinlow’s family were still in shock – telling us her murder was too recent for them to speak on camera as they mourned a young woman with a bright future cut short.

Kinlow was a member of the University of Illinois at Chicago Jazz Ensemble and a music teacher at the School of Rock at Park Ridge.

The family told us that Kinlow had just finished the finale on Monday afternoon and was leaving her home at Belle Shore Apartments, 1062 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., to go to work.

Kinlow’s family learned that she had met another man from her apartment building. After a brief exchange, as she walked away near the first-floor elevator, she was shot.

Police said she was found at 1.22pm on Monday.

Neighbors said they heard the gunshots upstairs, but didn’t realize it was so close.

“My bed is right by the window and I heard what I assumed was a gunshot,” neighbor Jennifer Culajay said.

The family received a call from Kinlow’s employer. She never managed to work.

And then early Tuesday morning, a 22-year-old man was found dead in the same building. Police returned on Tuesday to execute a search warrant.

The neighbors are now worried, with two investigations so close to home in such a short time.

“I got really worried, because I have a teenager – and sometimes he’s here with me on the weekends, and I leave him here for a little while,” neighbor Hugo Torres said. “I was scared. Honestly, I was scared.”

“I had no idea any of this so it’s super shocking,” Culajay added.

Kinlow was expected to graduate in just a few days. Her family say they will be remembered for her positive spirit, talent and bright smile.

Both families said police have said whether the two Belle Shore deaths are linked is still under investigation – saying only that no one is in custody at this time.
